Job Summary:

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office State Government Division/Public Law Section (PLS) is seeking an Assistant Attorney General to serve as an Independent Advisor to a variety of boards, commissions and councils represented by the State Government Division.
This position may be eligible for Remote Work two days a week.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (# days per week in the office/hoteling).
OR
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:

This Assistant Attorney General position primarily provides independent legal advice to boards, commissions, and councils that require assistance from an attorney other than their regularly assigned Assistant Attorney General. Most often the need for independent legal advice arises when a board conducts a hearing or considers a recommended decision in a case. The Independent Advisor frequently assists health profession and occupational licensing boards.
The Independent Advisor will also provide advice and representation to PLS client agencies, as assigned. The Public Law Section represents a diverse group of state agencies and boards involved in areas such as financial regulation (Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions), promotions (Arizona Office of Tourism), military affairs (Department of Veterans’ Services), agriculture and natural resources (Department of Agriculture). The attorney's duties will include preparing pleadings, presenting arguments and evidence at hearings in federal, state, and administrative tribunals and handling any associated appeals; providing advice and counsel on a variety of public law issues; legal research; and reviewing contracts. The attorney will also work with the lead Assistant Attorney General who reviews and makes recommendations concerning rules packages submitted to the Attorney General for approval.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge and understanding of applicable statutes, case law and court rules, both state and federal.
Knowledge of administrative rules and regulations.
Knowledge of Open Meetings Law and other areas of public law.
Knowledge and skill in case preparation, for administrative hearings and civil litigation.
Skill in legal and factual issue analysis, legal research, legal writing, oral presentation and negotiation.
Ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-attorney directors and staff of client agencies.
Ability to perform demanding legal research involving complex questions of law.
Ability to analyze difficult and complex legal issues and to apply legal principles and precedents.
Ability to present statements of fact, law and argument involving multiple parties clearly and logically in written and oral form.
Ability to make presentations to non-attorney audiences on legal and administrative matters.
Abilities include effective and situation-appropriate interpersonal communication, good judgment, high ethical and professional standards.

Selective Preference(s):

Experience in representation of government agencies. Litigation experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

• Travel is required for this position. A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically.
• Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required (include on resume the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states). Candidate must have an active Arizona State Bar license.
• Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile.
The writing sample should contain an analysis of some substantive legal issue and provide insight concerning your ability to think and to explain and advocate for a particular position.
• All applicants under serious consideration for hire with the Attorney General's Office are required to be fingerprinted by the Office and complete a criminal background check through State and Federal agencies.
