Job Summary:

Reports to State Traffic Engineer, & supervises Engineering Team Leaders. Performs administrative & advanced professional engineering work in planning, organizing, directing & reviewing the work of the Traffic Design Section (TDS). Responsible for quality & timeliness of TDS work product. Provides professional engineering support to SEO, STE & TDS. Represents TDS at PRB. Oversees TDS project & operating budgets. Provides
professional leadership for subordinates. Other duties as directed. Model ADOT values through leading, coaching and developing problem solvers to implement and sustain a continuous improvement culture. Leaders are accountable, transparent, and communicative as they foster an inclusive, diverse, and safe environment.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:
  • Provide engineering and technical direction for the administration of multiple, highly complex design, construction projects or traffic contracts to ensure work is performed in a manner that provides a functional, durable, project that meets design intent at a reasonable cost and in compliance with all Federal and State Policies/Guidelines.

  • Provide leadership, coaching and supervision of the subordinate personnel to enhance the quality of the product, service to the customer and assure compliance with all applicable plans, specification, roles and requirements.

  • Provide input on project scopes, designs & development representing the best interests of the State in project development meetings & other meetings related to the Arizona State Highway System. May drive a vehicle in the course & scope of State business.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:

Drafting standards, data collection techniques, agency policies, procedures, and standards, ADOT-TPG and the Arizona RDG, state statutes, safety practices, principles of consultant agreements, standards and guidelines for traffic control devices, Federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and applicable AASHTO documents and guidelines

Skill in:

Oral & written communications, organizing & prioritizing work assignments, team building & functions, project management process, researching & interpreting technical data, monitoring the work done by the team leads in analyzing & designing major highway related projects & computer  applications including: Microstation and SignCAD

Ability in:

Listening & problem solving techniques, reading & interpreting engineering documents, time management, prioritization, monitoring the progress of the projects delivered every quarter to ensure the goals established by PDO are being met & projects are on schedule & budget, establishing & maintaining effective working relationship with ADOT Groups, Departments & other project stakeholders Ability to coach and develop employees, including continuous improvement practices and principles

Selective Preference(s):

Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil or project management preferred).
Experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer grade 24.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Certification as a professional Engineer in the State of Arizona.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and  the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
