Job Summary:

As a CNA with the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services (ADVS) you will carry out all assigned para-professional nursing care and treatment services in a prescribed and efficient manner while ensuring a safe, therapeutic, and clean environment.

As an employee of the State of Arizona you will learn, implement, and monitor Arizona Management System (AMS) methods while utilizing AMS concepts and tools for problem solving and continuous work/process improvements and efficiencies. ADVS incorporates a cultural focus on Veteran/Member centered care in the performance of job duties.

Job Duties:

As a Certified Nursing Assistant, you will:

  • Assist Veterans'/Members with transfers, ambulation, eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, personal hygiene and other ADLs
  • Follow instructions to use simple procedures and devices to strengthen Veterans'/Members' limbs and maintain flexibility
  • Assist nursing staff with simple medical procedures such as suppositories, enemas, treatments, post-surgical care and post-mortem care
  • Assist in monitoring physical and mental status of Veterans/Members by utilizing appropriate medical equipment and techniques to take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations); obtain urine, sputum or stool samples; and track input/output
  • Responsible for medical record and worksheet documentation on all assigned Veterans/Members
  • Keep records and prepares simple reports
  • Assist Veterans/Members with dining to include transporting to the dining room, informing them about menu choices available for the day, communicating dining staff about Veterans'/Members' choices and serves Veterans/Members their meals in courses, assisting them if necessary
  • Provide resident care and comfort by responding to patient requests (verbal or call light) for assistance timely in accordance with the Resident Bill of Rights
  • Maintain cleanliness of areas neat and sanitary by changing bedding, linens and other items
  • Report to and assist licensed nurses in emergency situations rapidly and appropriately following established policies and procedures
  • Perform other related duties such as transporting Veterans/Members to appointments outside the facility and clerical duties (e.g., answering phones, filing, etc.) as needed
  • Actively participate in AMS processes such Huddle Boards, Problem Solving, Job Breakdown Sheets, Success Tracking, and Standardized Work. Participates fully in the QAPI process, our Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement program mandate by CMS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and techniques of para-professional nursing care, treatment and services appropriate to the work setting
  • State and agency laws and regulations governing para-professional nursing practices
  • Practices and procedures of using medical equipment in assigned duties
  • Practices and procedures established for the work environment
  • Practices and techniques applied in maintaining a safe, orderly, therapeutic and hygienic environment

Skills in:

  • Using and maintaining medical equipment
  • Recording, maintaining filing and retrieving medical records
  • Verbal and written communication

Ability to:

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships
  • Learn, implement, and monitor Arizona Management System (AMS) methods
Selective Preference(s):

One or more years working in a Skilled Nursing/Long-term Care facility

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Current Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from Tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or Tuberculosis
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
  • Current or temporary license to practice as a CNA/LPN/RN nurse in the State of Arizona
  • Current CPR card that was obtained by physical assessment
  • Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on State business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see A.AC. R2-10-207.11).
