Employees must currently be a Correctional Sergeant with Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry, have worked a minimum of six months at current institution, and received at least a meets expectations overall rating on most recent performance evaluation.
The ideal candidate will have two years of experience as a Sergeant with the Arizona Department of Corrections but six months experience in rank as a Sergeant is acceptable. The ideal candidate will be certified as a Firearms, Self-Defense, CARE, Physical Fitness training instructor and ADC instructor certification, however these certifications are not required upon application.
Note: Candidates must have the ability to be certified as a Firearms, Self-Defense, CARE and Physical Fitness training instructor within the first six months of appointment and be able to maintain certification during COTA assignment.
Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)

This position is responsible for directly supervising two (2) Class Advisors/Correctional Officer II’s and 20-45
Correctional Officers that are attending a pre-service training at the Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA) or at a regional location. This position will instruct classes and facilitate skills training, conduct inspections, maintain training records, supervise physical training, administer all testing and recommend discipline for COI’s. This position will also complete a performance evaluation on all assigned cadets. This position may occasionally be tasked with special project, i.e., class curriculum and Power Point shows. Additional responsibilities may include instructor scheduling and managing the Cadet Waiver program. This position conducts pre-service training in qualifications, re-qualifications, familiarization and remedial training in the use of firearms for correctional series employees in positions that require the staff member to carry a firearm. Required to drive on state business. Perform other duties appropriate to the assignment.

This position is subject to the provisions of Department Order 522, Drug Free Workplace.
Knowledge of: Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and due process governing the security, order and discipline of inmates; principles and practices of supervision, work leadership and training; methods, techniques and practices of maintaining the security, order and discipline of staff and inmates; methods and techniques of self-defense, and use of weapons and related defense/control equipment; vernacular used by inmates; methods, techniques and practices of the paraprofessional counseling for inmates; portable and stationary, two-way radio networks used to communicate inside an institution or with other institutions; methods and techniques of performing administrative work appropriate to the assignment.
Skill in/Ability to: Applying and interpreting Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing the security, order and discipline of inmates; applying the methods and techniques of supervision; determining staff assignments for prescribed security and order; training staff in the proper methods of security, use of force and paraprofessional counseling; interpreting the vernacular used by inmates; training in the proper use of weapons and related defense and control equipment; basic first aid measures, and use of devices for self-protection from serious health disorders; verbal and written communications as required by the duties and assignments in a correctional setting; interpersonal relationships within a correctional setting; maintaining a calm and even temperament during emergency situations; performing the administrative work activities appropriate to the assignment.
