What You'll Do:
As the Database Administrator is responsible for database design, ensuring reliability, upholding security standards, deployment and optimizing performance of AHCCCS databases. You will work on both standard maintenance support issues and day-to-day operational activities including break/fix, capacity management, backup and recovery, database replication setup/management and ongoing database change reviews. Works closely with our Infrastructure, Development, Data Analytics and Quality Assurance teams, identifying issues while also suggesting and implementing corrective actions.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Manage and administer AHCCCS databases, including monitoring, performance tuning, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance and availability.
• Configure and maintain data warehouse security policies and access controls to ensure data integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements. Responsible for tasks such as development of best practices and repeatable procedures for deploying database structures.
• Monitor and manage data warehouse backups, restores, and data retention policies.
• Performs Database Systems production on-call support.
• Provide technical support and guidance to data analysts on data warehouse-related issues and occasionally help with Informatica -ETL migration and development
• Develop and maintain disaster recovery and high availability strategies for the data warehouse environment.
Knowledge:
• Database Management Systems (DBMS): Comprehensive understanding of various database management systems, particularly Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, or similar cloud-based platforms
• Data Warehousing Concepts: Strong grasp of data warehousing principles, methodologies, and best practices
• Azure Services: Proficiency in Azure services relevant to database administration, such as Azure Synapse Analytics. Creation and use of Synapse Pipelines
• SQL and Query Optimization: In-depth knowledge of SQL querying and optimization techniques to enhance database performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimize data retrieval processes in a data warehouse environment
Skills:
• Database Administration: Proven experience in administering, monitoring, and maintaining Azure SQL databases and data warehouses, including database provisioning, configuration, backup, recovery, and performance tuning
• Troubleshooting and Debugging: Strong troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve database-related issues, optimize query performance, troubleshoot data integration problems, and ensure the smooth functioning of data warehouse operations
• Scripting and Automation: write scripts (e.g., PowerShell, T-SQL) and leverage automation tools to automate routine database administration tasks, streamline processes, and improve operational efficiency
• Collaboration and Communication: Excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively interact with cross-functional teams, stakeholders
Abilities:
• Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyze complex data sets, identify trends, patterns, and anomalies, and derive actionable insights to support decision-making processes and improve data warehouse performance
• Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity within the data warehouse environment
• Problem-Solving Orientation: Strong problem-solving orientation with the ability to approach challenges with a systematic mindset, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and
implement effective solutions to address database-related issues and optimize performance
Minimum:
• Bachelor’s degree plus 5 or more years of experience in database administration (or equivalent experience). Equivalent experience to include: 2 years Application Programming, 2 years Application Analysis and Design, 5 Data Base Administration or Data Base Administration Training - vendor specific with a focus on data warehouse technologies. Strong proficiency in Azure database services, particularly Azure Synapse (Azure SQL Data Warehouse).
Preferred:
• Experience with Azure Data Factory,Databricks, and other Azure data integration and analytics services is a plus.
• Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired State employees.
• Successfully pass fingerprint background check, prior employment verifications and reference checks; employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
• Travel may be required for State business. Employees who drive on state business must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.) AND have an acceptable driving record for the last 39 months including no DUI, suspension or revocations and less than 8 points on your license. If an Out of State Driver License was held within the last 39 months, a copy of your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) is required prior to driving for State Business. Employees may be required to use their own transportation as well as maintaining valid motor vehicle insurance and current Arizona vehicle registration; however, mileage will be reimbursed.
- If selected for an interview, you will be required to complete an exercise so that we may assess proficiency in Azure database services, particularly Azure Synapse (Azure SQL Data Warehouse).
