To provide oversight of the entire nursing department of APH in coordination with the Medical Director and Superintendent.
This position is responsible for ensuring all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and regulations are fully complied with and will also be responsible for ensuring applicable policies and procedures are adhered to by staff.
This position is responsible for all functions of the nursing department including hiring, firing, evaluating and disciplining of all subordinates.
The DON is second in command, and responsible for the Home when the Superintendent is unavailable.
• Participate in implementation of APH regulatory compliance. Participate in nursing services administration to include scheduling, chart audits, regulatory compliance of subordinates, monitor and advise subordinates regarding proper implementation of APH policies and procedures and participate actively in medical clinics as indicated; communicate needs and concerns to Medical Director and Superintendent. Participate in DHS surveys and ensure proper application of Arizona Nursing Care institution regulations
• Assist with employee, family member and resident problem resolution. Responsible for completion of employee evaluations, counseling, coaching and disciplinary issues. Responsible for hiring and firing decisions in accordance with applicable Personnel rules. Ensure adequate nursing department staff at all times. Maintain resident confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines
• Participate and/or delegate participation in meetings to include QA, risk/safety, care plan, physician run medical clinics, Resident Council, staff development, forms meetings and policy and procedure development. Ensure proper application of of infection control methods by all subordinate staff. Ensure care plans are properly implemented by staff. Participate/delegate participation in admissions and discharges. Ensure timely completion of departmental payroll. Perform nursing supervisory phone duties as needed due to staffing issues
• Ensures adequate pharmaceuticals, treatment supplies, personal care items, and other necessary items are available for staff to complete their respective jobs
• Perform other duties as needed or directed to fulfill agency nursing department needs. Such duties may include ordering or DME and pharmaceuticals, intervening on behalf of subordinates with family or physicians, employee training and education, resident education and other duties to fulfill the mission and regulatory compliance of APH while providing fiscally responsible and high quality health care to the residents of APH
• Fulfill or delegate scheduling of nursing staff. Calculate timecards for payroll
• Other duties as assigned as related to the position
Knowledge:
• Must possess a current Arizona Registered Nurse license and have extensive knowledge in skilled nursing care, standards, and protocols including nursing management practices, advanced clinical assessment and experience in staff and organization development as well as training, coaching, counseling, disciplining and evaluating procedures
• Must posses the ability to develop, implement and maintain nursing clinical and management systems to effect best nursing practices and care outcomes
• Knowledge of employee relations and rules
Skills:
• Nursing skills pursuant to evidence based practices relative to skilled/assisted living standards
• Skills in security, control and dispensing of medical supplies and medications
• Able to deal with customers of various cognitive and cultural backgrounds
• Skills in supervision and management of personnel
• Highly developed skills in nursing assessments

• Ability to perform nursing duties and perform basic office computer skills

• Ability to develop teams
• Assisted Living Manager certification, or the ability to become certified within six months of hire
• Current Fingerprint Clearance Card
• Arizona Registered Nurse license
• Current CPR Card
• Ideal candidate will have at least one year of college level training or experience in leadership and supervision of employees in addition to their RN
• Extensive knowledge in nursing department operations, regulations, management practices, clinical assessment skills, and able to demonstrate excellent analytical, clinical, problem solving, prioritization, judgment and decision making skills
• At least one year experience in the area of long term care nursing and/or assisted living
• One year college level education in the area of budget management
• BSN or MSN level preferred
