This Equipment Repair Technician position offers a great opportunity for you to combine your journey level mechanical experience and your excellent diagnostic skills in maintaining the Class A, C and D buses for ASDB and Equipment Services. You’ll stay challenged with a diverse set of job duties and enjoy working in a fast-paced and supportive work environment.  CDL training and other resources will be provided by Equipment Services and ADOT.

This position is eligible to participate in the ASE Stipend Pay Program, employees can earn up to $14,400 a year with qualifying certifications. We reimburse 100% of the cost for passed tests and offer training assistance!

Uniforms provided to shop employees at no charge and are eligible to participate in the Safety-toe Shoe reimbursement program (100% of cost up to $250.00 every other calendar year)

Personal Tool Allowance of $1000.00 per calendar year and Personal Tool Insurance Coverage 100% for qualified losses on state premises

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 6:00am – 2:30pm

Anticipated hiring salary is $24.4327 hourly ($50,820 annually) with a potential to earn up to $31.3557 hourly ($65,220 annually) when ASE Triple Master Certified Technician status is obtained.

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for performing highly skilled diagnosis, inspections, maintenance, and repairs to Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB) class A, C and D buses ensuring compliance with all safety requirements.

Job Duties:

Diagnose and repair Diesel and Gas powered internal combustion engine. Diagnose problems in A/C, electrical, electronic, mechanical and hydraulic systems on Class A,C and D buses.

Advises dispatch of vehicle availability and coordinates with vendors/manufacturers as needed.

Road test/operate equipment after repair/maintenance has been completed and maintain daily records. Requires a driver’s license/CDL.

Maintain shop truck and be ready to respond to road/service calls in a timely manner. Determines if a field repair can be made or make arrangements to have the vehicle brought back to the yard.

Perform miscellaneous activities: attend training classes and safety meetings, confer with supervisors, customers, manufacturers/parts personnel, etc., on work assignments, parts running, shop clean up and necessary paperwork.

This position requires flexibility with work hours and days/nights, weekends and holidays to accommodate emergency repair work and varied schedules.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:
* Bus A/C systems, bus power/drive train system inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
* Electrical systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
* Electronic control systems inspection, diagnosis and repair procedures.
* Computerized diagnostic analyzer use procedures and practices.
* Hydraulic systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
* The operating principles of gasoline and diesel powered internal combustion engines.
* Fleet maintenance shop safety principles and practices.
* Record keeping principles and practices.
* Understanding of DOT out of service criteria.

Skills in:
* Repairing and maintaining mechanical, electrical, electronic and A/C systems of different types of buses.
* Operating computerized diagnostic analyzer equipment.
* Estimating time cost of repair maintenance work for a wide variety of school buses.
* Scheduling/coordinating bus service and repair to maximize utilization.

Ability to:
* Follow oral and written instructions.
* Quickly evaluate repairs to determine course of action.
* Interpret repair manuals, service bulletins and recall bulletins.
* Utilize a PC and PC programs such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
* Manage time effectively.
* Lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull 90 lbs; pass a physical exam.

Selective Preference(s):

Three years of journey level experience diagnosing and repairing a variety of light automotive/heavy construction equipment/busses.

ASE certification and/or Medium/Heavy Duty Truck, Bus or Heavy Equipment Manufacturers certifications are highly desirable.

Successful candidate must have their own tools for the position.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Position requires possession of EPA 608/609 certification or the ability to obtain certification within the sixth month of employment.

Employment is contingent upon passing a medical/physical examination.

Position requires possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with P endorsement or the ability to obtain a Class B CDL with P endorsement within the sixth month of employment. Retention of said licenses and endorsements are required during the period of employment. Additional CDL endorsements may be required during the period of employment to meet shop mission requirements.

Once a Class B permit is obtained, the selected employee will be required to register and authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment. Register by visiting https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/Register 

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
