This position is responsible for the transportation, operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and support vehicles (on highway and off-road) to support a wide variety of construction projects throughout the state. Responsibilities include the safe operation of heavy equipment including but not limited to track type tractors, motor graders, front end loaders, backhoes, forklifts, excavators, and skid steer loaders.
Examples of the types of projects include but not limited to: maintenance of dams, shooting facilities and hatcheries; road maintenance; wildlife water catchment and earthen tank maintenance and construction; flood control structure construction; boating access facility construction. Completes and submits timely, required department records and documentation. Ensures all relevant DOT regulations pertaining to the safe and legal transportation of heavy equipment and materials are in compliance. Maintains a safe working environment that is compliant with federal, state and department policies and procedures. Attends and participates in department training and meetings as required. Consults with department personnel, vendors and other agencies on project status and/or details. Work schedule will vary depending on project demand (e.g. four ten-hour days). Position will require statewide travel and may include camping in remote areas for extended periods of time with seasonal exposure to hot, cold, and wet weather conditions. Perform other duties as assigned.
The candidate will have knowledge of and/or skill in:
Equipment Operation – Capability to operate a variety of heavy equipment including a 10-wheeled dump truck and tractor trailer equipment. Knowledge of road construction and maintenance, wildlife water catchments, earthen tanks, ponds, dikes, grading and earth moving techniques.
Equipment Maintenance – Knowledge of diesel and gas engine operation; basic maintenance and repairs; ability to determine periodic equipment maintenance requirements. Skill in performing preventative maintenance on heavy equipment.
Construction Techniques – General knowledge of a variety of construction trades and techniques. Ability to read and interpret construction plans and use basic survey equipment.
Loading, Transporting Equipment and Material Handling Techniques – Knowledge of safety procedures for loading and transporting heavy equipment. Skilled in safe transport of equipment and materials.
The candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
The ideal candidate will have strong oral and written communication skills and have the ability to adapt to changing conditions and work schedules. The preferred candidate will have OSHA 10 or higher safety certification. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and understanding of the North American Model for Wildlife Management.
Position requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid State of Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (class A with tanker endorsement) appropriate to the assignment (must be obtained within six months of hire). Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training in accordance with Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.
