The Arizona Game and Fish Commission, whose five members are appointed by the governor, are responsible for establishing policies and rules for the management, preservation, and harvest of Arizona’s wildlife. The Arizona Game & Fish Department is responsible for managing Arizona’s fish and wildlife resource as an enduring public trust. In addition, the department is charged with promoting safe and responsible use of watercraft and off-highway vehicles. Funding is provided from the sale of licenses and permits; watercraft registration fees; federal excise taxes on firearms, fishing equipment, boats, and other sporting goods; state lottery revenues; donations on state income tax forms; and various contracts and grants.

Job Summary:

The Arizona Game and Fish Department offers paid internship opportunities to current students, graduate and undergraduate. Recent (within the past year) graduates are also eligible to apply. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in gaining hands-on practical work experience while working with a diverse group of professionals in the fields of wildlife science, biological science, wildlife management, and many other professions within the Department.

Student interns are hired on a temporary basis and paid an hourly rate of $16.50. Interns are not benefit eligible and work at the discretion of the appointing authority. Interns may be employed through their approved assignment or the department determines that the work is no longer required. Assignments are typically full-time unless indicated by the hiring supervisor.

Job Duties:

(2 internships) BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION INTERN (40 hours/wk)
Join the Boat Safety Education Program to help teach Arizona boating safety, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding courses across the state, including the Phoenix metro area. You'll deliver both classroom and on-water programs aimed at increasing public awareness of safe, responsible watercraft recreation. Kayaking and getting in the water will be part of the job.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and assist with boating safety, carbon monoxide awareness, and the “Wear It” life jacket campaign (70% fieldwork).
- Assist staff in delivering education and outreach on boating and paddlesports safety (20%).
- Support off-highway vehicle education, research, customer service, data entry, and report creation (10%).
This is a field-heavy role (50-70% in the field), requiring travel and weekend work. Based at AZGFD headquarters in Phoenix (5000 W. Carefree Hwy). The schedule is 40 hours/week, typically with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off.

(1internship) WILDLIFE VIEWING PROGRAM INTERN
Description of Duties: The Wildlife Viewing Intern will assist the Wildlife Viewing team with the delivery of in-person wildlife viewing public events, and may assist in the planning and research of wildlife based content for workshops and webinars. Additionally, the intern will assist with the delivery of wildlife viewing programming. Most duties will be done in an outdoor, in-person, public-facing capacity. Intern should have a passion for wildlife education and conservation. The internship is a part time internship (20-29 hours/wk). The position will work out of the Phoenix Headquarters office and is set to run 5/12/25 - 8/15/25. A post-offer physical exam will be required for this position. Required/Preferred skills: Attention to detail, strong reading, writing and wildlife research skills, team player, ability to work flexible schedule including weekends, ability to work in extreme temperatures, general understanding of Arizona wildlife

 

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of curriculum leading towards a Bachelor’s or higher level degree on a full time basis (usually 12 semester hours) and pursuing a major in Wildlife Biology or closely related field applicable to the internship opportunity (subject to verification)

• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States
• Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above
• Valid driver's license (free of restrictions, if applicable)

If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
