Job Summary:

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties:

Intern Project/Outcome Expected from the Intern:
• State Management Action Plan (SMAP)
• Risk Plus Factors for non-active Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS)
• ADEQ Story Map for FUDS landing page
• Federal, State and Local Government Interaction
• GIS and Drone data processing (optional)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

The intern will gain experience leading a project and bring the following to the internship:
• The intern should have a basic understanding of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or be able to quickly learn.
• Furthermore, a strong foundation in environmental science.
• The intern should also have strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with the Unit Manager, colleagues, and stakeholders.
• Project management skills are required to prioritize tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines while assisting with various projects. Attention to detail is also essential to ensure the accuracy and completeness of data and reports.
• The intern should have the ability to work collaboratively with other interns, staff, and stakeholders in a diverse and inclusive environment.
• Computer skills are necessary to use computer software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
• Strong interpersonal skills are also necessary to interact with program managers, staff, and stakeholders effectively.

The intern will gain experience leading a project and gain the following from this internship:
• The intern project will consist of developing a State Management Action Plan (SMAP) and assisting with a reassessment of the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) Program. The project duties of the SMAP will include:
• working with leadership in development of the SMAP (workplan) skeleton
• project deliverable is a living document that identifies all FUDS located within the state, summarizes past and planned activities, identified anticipated future activities, and is easily updated annually
• conduct desktop and historical document research to identity data gaps (risk plus factors)
• conduct interviews or community outreach with local governments
• assist with planning of the annual Arizona Forum Meeting with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
• assist with web design and GIS for development of a Story Map
• potential drone and imaging/resolution assistance with the GIS team

Selective Preference(s):

• Intern candidate must be in their Junior or Senior year of a BS/BA or working towards a Masters/PhD program.
• Selective preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in geology, chemistry, environmental sciences, or environmental policy.
• Candidate must have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
• Candidate must have the right to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship.
• Candidate must be at least 18 years old.
