Assists in development and coordination of exhibits, programs, and research activities. May also serve as a museum specialist in such areas as collections, historic sites, historic archaeology, manuscripts and archival materials, or education.
Performs other related work as assigned. Supports, researches and edits material for publication.
May supervise interns/volunteers as needed. Occasionally cover front desk admissions and positively represents the agency and its mission to patrons and the general public.
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.
• Ensures that the exhibits are clean and all objects, panels, and photos are in accordance with museum standards; this includes and is not limited to serving on any committees as needed by AHS, attending and hosting in virtual and in person programs as needed by the exhibits team, working with the and any AHS partner organizations, and working with marketing and experience ideas teams as needed
• Curator II will assist the exhibits team and supervisor in installing any new temporary, permanent, and updated exhibits as needed; this includes, but is not limited to: painting galleries, installing cases, hanging panels and photographs, handling and installing objects, and any other necessary tasks
• Installation and deinstall of exhibits requires travel to the four museum locations at times and will require driving the state van and transporting objects and materials as needed for that process
• Work with AdobePro and Photoshop and submit to supervisor with panel and photo designs for any temporary and permanent gallery refreshes
• Secures objects for exhibitions, conducts research, works collaboratively with other staff in the development of narratives and story lines
• Partake in any additional training and professional development as directed by supervisor and/or exhibit team lead(s)
• Seek out conferences and other networking opportunities to expand knowledge of best museum standards
• Works closely with staff on all aspects of exhibit development, including concept, planning
• Identifies objects from within collection or from other institutions for exhibitions
• Regular maintenance of existing exhibits and lighting throughout display areas
• Scheduling fabrication and installation
• Maintenance of workshops and tools
• Writes interpretive materials
Knowledge of:
• Methods utilized in conserving, preparing, storing, and exhibiting museum objects and documents, or minerals
• Registration, conservation, and exhibition techniques and related research
• Arizona and regional history, objects and documents
• Museum policies and guidelines
• Historical research techniques
Skills in:
• Identification, acquisition, accession, deaccession, conservation, preservation, registration and cataloging of objects, documents, or mineral specimens
• Applying and interpreting historic preservation procedures and associated laws and state statutes, and governing board policy and procedures
• Locating objects, documents, and mineral specimens for collection and/or loan
• Oral and written communication techniques
• Conducting research
• Preparing exhibits
Ability to:
• Provide oral and written communication techniques; conduct research
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Write detailed reports, grant requests, research reports
• Direct the preparation of exhibits
• A Bachelor's degree in American history, museum studies or related field, and two years of related technical experience or
one year of experience equivalent to a Museum Curator 1
• A graduate degree in one of the above fields may substitute for one year of the required technical experience preferred
• The ability to obtain an Arizona State Driver's license
