The Arizona State Veterans' Home—Yuma is offering a unique opportunity for patient and dedicated Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) to join our team. This role is not just about providing high-quality care, but also about making a significant difference in the lives of our veterans.

As a CNA with the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services (ADVS), you will provide our veterans with essential nursing care and treatment services. Your responsibilities will include ensuring a safe, therapeutic, and clean environment, following established protocols, and contributing to our culture of veteran-centered care.

Your Impact:

  • Daily Living Assistance: Your role as a CNA is crucial in providing veterans with assistance in transfers, ambulation, eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, personal hygiene, and other activities of daily living (ADLs). Your care and support can make a significant difference in their lives.
  • Medical Support: Assist nursing staff in administering enemas, treatments, post-surgical care, and post-mortem care.
  • Vital Monitoring: Monitor physical and mental status by taking vital signs, obtaining samples, and tracking input/output.
  • Record Keeping: Document medical records and worksheets, maintain cleanliness, and prepare simple reports.
  • Meal Assistance: Support veterans during dining by informing them of menu choices, transporting them to the dining room, and assisting them with meals.
  • Emergency Response: Assist licensed nurses in emergencies promptly and effectively, following established policies and procedures.
  • Additional Duties: Perform clerical duties, transport veterans to appointments, and participate actively in AMS processes such as Huddle Boards and Quality Assurance programs.

Requirements:

  • Certification: Active certification to practice as a Certified Nursing Assistant in Arizona.
  • Clearance: The Arizona Department of Public Safety must issue a fingerprint clearance card.
  • Experience: Preferred 1+ years of experience in a Skilled Nursing or Long-term Care facility.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Understanding para-professional nursing practices, state and agency laws, medical equipment usage, and maintaining a safe and hygienic environment.

Job Duties:

As a CNA you will:

  • Assist Veterans/Members with transfers, ambulation, eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, personal hygiene and other ADLs.
  • Follow instructions to use simple procedures and devices to strengthen Veterans'/Members' limbs and maintain flexibility.
  • Assist nursing staff with simple medical procedures such as suppositories, enemas, treatments, post-surgical care and post-mortem care.
  • Assist in monitoring physical and mental status of Veterans/Members by utilizing appropriate medical equipment and techniques to take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations); obtain urine, sputum or stool samples; and track input/output.
  • Responsible for medical record and worksheet documentation on all assigned Veterans/Members.
  • Keep records and prepares simple reports.
  • Assist Veterans/Members with dining to include transporting to the dining room, informing them about menu choices available for the day, communicating dining staff about Veterans'/Members' choices and serves Veterans/Members their meals in courses, assisting them if necessary.
  • Provide resident care and comfort by responding to patient requests (verbal or call light) for assistance timely in accordance with the Resident Bill of Rights.
  • Maintain cleanliness of areas neat and sanitary by changing bedding, linens and other items
  • Report to and assist licensed nurses in emergency situations rapidly and appropriately following established policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties such as transporting Veterans/Members to appointments outside the facility and clerical duties (e.g., answering phones, filing, etc.) as needed.
  • Actively involved in AMS processes such Huddle Boards, Problem Solving, Job Breakdown Sheets, Success Tracking, and Standardized Work.
  • Participate fully in the QAPI process, our Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement program mandate by CMS which incorporates AMS.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and techniques of para-professional nursing care, treatment and services appropriate to the work setting
  • State and agency laws and regulations governing para-professional nursing practices
  • Practices and procedures of using medical equipment in assigned duties
  • Practices and procedures established for the work environment
  • Practices and techniques applied in maintaining a safe, orderly, therapeutic and hygienic environment

Skills in:

  • Applying methods and techniques of para-professional nursing practices
  • Applying and interpreting State and agency laws and regulations governing para-professional nursing practices
  • Using and maintaining medical equipment
  • Applying methods and techniques in maintaining a safe, orderly, therapeutic and hygienic environment
  • Recording, maintaining filing and retrieving medical records
  • Verbal and written communication

Ability to:

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships
  • Learn, implement, and monitor Arizona Management System (AMS) methods
Selective Preference(s):

One or more years of Skilled Nursing Facility or Long-Term Care Experience preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Current Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from Tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or Tuberculosis
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
  • Current or temporary license to practice as a CNA nurse in the State of Arizona
  • Current CPR card that was obtained by physical assessment
