Job Summary:

Perform technical and specialized laboratory tests of concrete, independence assurance cylinders, and concrete acceptance cylinders. Perform a full range of laboratory testing on soil and aggregates as well as asphaltic concrete in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

(AASHTO), and Arizona testing methods. Report test results to lab lead worker and input into FAST. Assist in proper maintenance, calibration, and repair of all laboratory equipment. Work is scheduled with construction project schedules and may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Job Duties:

Perform a full range of laboratory tests on soil, aggregate, asphalt, asphaltic concrete, and Portland cement concrete for highway construction projects in the Flagstaff Regional Materials Lab.

Work and cooperate with other other laboratory technicians and project personnel.

Assist technicians in other ADOT labs as workload demands.

Receive training as required and become proficient with new procedures implemented in the lab.

Using a state vehicle, transport and deliver or pick up material samples and/or equipment from other labs and project sites. Log materials for testing.

Clean the laboratory and maintain a safe work environment. Calibrate laboratory equipment.

Assist in road blocks/traffic control during emergencies and/or road closures.

Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:
- Methods and testing procedures used in highway construction materials sampling, testing, and inspection for AASHTO, ASTM, and Arizona.
- Soil, aggregate, Portland cement concrete, bituminous materials, and bituminous mixtures.
- Federal and state statutes, agency standards and procedures including the ADOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction.
- Approved record keeping and documentation methods.
- Laboratory and work zone safety.

Skill:
- Advanced mathematics.
- Working and communicating with a team while maintaining professionalism.
- Various computer programs including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Ability:
- Stand on feet for extended period of time.
- Perform repetitive tasks for a long period of time.
- Multitask and perform multiple tests concurrently.
- Learn and implement new and evolving test methods and equipment.

Selective Preference(s):

High school diploma or equivalent.
Certification with Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) or Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC).
Experience as a technician working in a highway construction materials testing lab, highway construction field testing or inspection experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Soils certification must be obtained with 18 months of hire.
Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Asphalt certification must be obtained with 18 months of hire.
American Concrete Institute (ACI) Strength Testing certification must be obtained with 24 months of hire.
