Mix Design Lab Technician

Job Summary:

This position is a technician in the mix design lab. Prepare samples and perform laboratory tests on asphalt concrete mix materials, including mix design samples, field samples, and research samples.

Job Duties:

Perform laboratory tests on aliphatic concrete materials.

Clean laboratory work area and equipment.

Calibrate laboratory equipment.

Technical training for self. Coach, mentor, and train new employees.

Perform mathematical computations.

Enter laboratory data into computer.

Prepare samples for shipping to referee labs. May be required to drive a State vehicle.

Other duties as assigned as related to the position

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:
- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Arizona Test Methods.
- ADOT construction standards and specifications.
- Asphalt mixtures physical properties.

Skill in:
- Mathematics and computation.
- Laboratory sample preparation and testing.
- Various computer programs including Microsoft Office and Google Workplace.

Ability to:
- Multitask and keep track of different tests happening at the same time.
- Mentor and train other employees.

Selective Preference(s):

Strong background in laboratory sciences particularly in asphalt mix testing.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Soils certification must be obtained with 18 months of hire.
Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Asphalt certification must be obtained with 18 months of hire.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
