This is an entry level position which includes learning processes and techniques for performing inspections and sampling materials on highway construction project: observing and evaluating the conformance of various items of work using quantities, contract plans, special provisions, standard details and standard specifications; documenting observations, measurements, and other pertinent information in daily diaries; assuring the safety of the traveling public.
Overtime will be required including varying work shifts, working nights, weekends and holidays. Overnight travel will be required.
Knowledge in:
Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used in: highway construction, project documentation, materials testing, survey, and project inspection. Federal, state and local laws applicable to are of assignment.Standards and specifications, applicable to area of assignment. Operating procedures of assigned equipment.
Skill in:
Skills In operating a variety of equipment, such as survey instruments, material testing equipment, computers and office equipment. Operate a vehicle in a construction setting and on road. Analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of engineering related technical data. Reading and interpreting standards and specifications. Interpersonal relations as applied to contractors and fellow employees. Oral and Written communications. Computer and office machine operation.
Ability in:
Ability to perform basic math calculations; ability to use proper English and grammar; ability to safely operate a vehicle.
American Concrete Institute or Arizona Technical Testing Institute Certification within 12 month of being hired. It Is preferred the Incumbent possess at least one (1) year of experience in inspecting highway construction projects, hot mix, plants & concrete plants; or working with administrative/construction records or related duties.
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
