Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Transportation Engineering Chief Surveyor, provides specialized surveying services in highway design and construction. This position will utilizing available survey equipment which includes levels, total stations, scanners, GPS to provide critical field survey services in support of design and construction projects for the Department. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: design level terrain survey and modeling, collecting survey data for control, section corners, right-of-way markers, structures and edge of pavement, construction staking and as-built/record survey services, plan review, field review meetings, and more. This position will be a member of and work within a survey crew team.

Some out of town travel with overnight stays may be required for this position.

Job Duties:

Provide field construction survey staking and support services in accordance with industry and Department standards. Responsibilities include: review
of construction plans including details specific to the arena of assignment such as - right of way, placement of structures, earthwork quantities,
benchmark and alignment control, signing, striping, and traffic engineering features.

Provide field design level survey and terrain modeling. Responsibilities include: surveying field topographic, utility, right-of-way, structures, alignments, control, signing, striping and traffic engineering features in support of roadway design efforts.

Communication, documentation and coordination with design and construction personnel (ADOT Designers, Consultants, Resident Engineers, etc.).
Participates in project meetings and field reviews; makes recommendations to ensure plans and construction are in compliance with the design intent
and established standards, assists in addressing and evaluating design alternatives, analyzes survey data and summarizes findings and recommendations.

Provides technical instruction and assistance to project personnel; monitors project progress and evaluates work assignments and completeness.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge in:
*Principles and practices of civil engineering, geodetic and/or land surveying as applied to the development, design and construction of transportation systems.
*Uses and capable of a wide variety of survey equipment for collecting and processing field data.
*Computational and adjustment factors applied in the review and analysts of engineering and/or field surveying data related to area of assignment.
*Federal and State statutes and agency standards, policies, procedures applicable to the area of assignment.
*Public, agency and personal safety standards, policies, and procedures.
*First aid techniques.
*Principles and practices of work leadership and management.

Skill in:
*Analyzing, processing and evaluating a wide variety of engineering and survey data.
*Operating a wide variety of technical surveying equipment. This includes setting up, operating, calibrating, checking, and verifying performance and data.
*Organization and prioritization of tasks and assignments.
*Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chats, Meets).

Ability to:
*Work well individually and as a member of team.
*Research, read and interpret technical engineering plans and documents such as survey data, highway plans, and computer printouts.
*Interpret technical data from maps, plans, and aerial photographs.
*Write and maintain detailed field notes, apply practices of work leadership and management.
*Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with survey team, construction and design personnel.
*Analyze and evaluate a wide variety of engineering and/or survey related data.
*Safely operate a full size pick-up truck on and off road.
*Work outdoors for extended periods of time exposed to heat, cold, dust rain and noise.
*Ability to coach and develop employees, including continuous improvement practices and principles

Selective Preference(s):

Registered as a Land Surveyor in Training in Arizona (LSIT) or Registered Land Surveyor (RLS) in Arizona (or able to obtain within 6 months from date of hire). Applicable training courses and seminars relevant to position and use of survey equipment, construction plans reading, data processing, etc. Four years of experience surveying, including experience as a technician functioning as a lead worker performing activities related to surveying (i.e. may include but not inclusive of the following - CADD Technician, Rod Person, Instrument Person, or Junior Crew Chief).

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Must have a National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Level II certification within 6 months of date of hire and initially could be extended to 12 months based upon supervisors written request and Manager's approval.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
