This position will have the responsibility of coordinating and managing the Department’s Game Data via the Hunter Questionnaire Program and the Game Data Management System which includes the statewide hunter questionnaire and harvest surveys, population survey tools and applications, hunt recommendation tools and modifications, population modeling, mandatory harvest checkouts and physical check station processes.
-Manages the Hunter Questionnaire Program; designs and orders questionnaires, mails questionnaires, maintains responses, processes and summarizes files of hunters and selects samples for questionnaire mail-outs, coordinates data entry and summarizes data. Coordinates with agency vendors to maximize effectiveness and minimize cost of the questionnaire program. Summarizes data and distributes reports to Department personnel and the public (i.e. hunter questionnaire summaries, survey data and draw reports).
-Manages the Game Data Management System; maintains the game species data database as part of the hunt recommendation process. Assist in development of the tools integral to hunt recommendations, population surveys and modeling, regulation development and printing, hunter questionnaires and harvest tracking.
-Completes mandatory hunter checkouts during open seasons and is the primary employee responsible for tracking them.
-Provides input and technical expertise to development management plans. Provides information to other agencies and the public regarding hunter statistics, wildlife management, and ecology. Will become the expert in the draw and bonus point process. Assists other Department work units with wildlife management projects. Assist in the preparation, organization and implementation of wildlife captures/translocations.
-Performs other duties as assigned.
The candidate will have knowledge in the following areas: database management and development, data analysis to include basic statistical analysis, various spreadsheet and database software packages, and wildlife ecology and management techniques. The candidate will have skill in communicating both oral and written, presenting to a variety of audiences, strategic planning and program development, and effective budget planning. The candidate will be able to work with diverse points of view, collaborate on projects and work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team setting.
The preferred candidate will have some background in statistical analysis and software such as SPSS, SAS, MARK, or R, be comfortable and competent in the use of spreadsheets and databases such as Excel, Google Spreadsheets, Access, SQL or dBase, and geospatial databases and software. The individual in this position should demonstrate a willingness to learn and be trained in new software and technical advances, such as knowledge on how to use and develop geospatial tools.
The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in a wildlife science or closely related field from an accredited college or university and three years of professional experience in wildlife research or wildlife management. A graduate degree in a wildlife science or a closely related field may substitute for one year of required experience.
If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
